A sunset camel ride in the Merzouga desert offers an unforgettable way to see the Erg Chebbi dunes. Travelers usually arrive at the desert edge in the late afternoon, around 4:00–5:00 pm. A local guide welcomes them with Moroccan mint tea and introduces the camels.

The ride begins at a calm, steady pace. Guests enjoy the rolling dunes during the 45–60 minute journey. Shortly before sunset, the guide stops on a high dune. Visitors watch the sun dip below the horizon as the sand changes from gold to deep orange and soft pink. Many take photos or walk barefoot on the warm sand.

After sunset, the camels carry guests deeper into the dunes to a traditional desert camp. Camp staff greet visitors and show them to their tents. In the evening, a Moroccan dinner is served, often including tagine, couscous, salads, and fresh bread. Guests enjoy Berber music around the campfire while stargazing under the clear desert sky.

The next morning, many climb nearby dunes to watch the sunrise. After breakfast, the guide escorts guests back to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, completing the magical sunset camel ride in the Merzouga desert.

sunset camel ride Merzouga desert
A sunset camel ride in the Merzouga Desert is one of Morocco’s most iconic experiences. As you climb atop a gently swaying camel, you leave behind the small desert village and enter the vast expanse of Erg Chebbi, where towering golden dunes stretch to the horizon. The ride is peaceful, with only the soft sound of camel footsteps on the sand, giving you a sense of timelessness. About 30 minutes into the trek, you reach a high dune just in time to watch the sun dip slowly, painting the sand in vivid shades of orange, pink, and gold. Many tours pause here for photos or a brief walk, letting you fully immerse yourself in the sweeping, silent beauty of the Sahara. Some tours even offer mint tea or small snacks, enhancing the tranquil moment. The ride back down as twilight falls provides a magical contrast, with the cool desert air and a sky full of stars beginning to appear, making it an unforgettable, almost cinematic experience.
